carriage trade
«Каретная торговля». Этот термин использовался в конце XIX — начале XX вв. владельцами магазинов, лавочек и другими продавцами. Имелись в виду богатые покупатели, ездившие из магазина в магазин в своих колясках в отличие от покупателей, которые вынуждены были ходить по магазинам пешком или ездить на общественном транспорте. Слово carriage (карета, коляска) всё ещё встречается в официальных приглашениях на вечера, балы и приёмы во фразе: 'Carriages at 11'. Это значит, что вечер закончится к 11-ти часам, и шофёры должны подъехать за пассажирами в это время.
